Liverpool is the fast way to the Isle of Man, if you pick the right time of year. From spring to autumn the fast craft Manannan does the crossing in 2 hours 45 minutes, from a new terminal a short hop from the city centre. In winter it’s a different route: weekends only, on a conventional ship taking over four hours. This page covers the terminal, getting there, parking and the seasons. The other routes and the ships are on the Isle of Man ferry.
Summer and winter are different routes
| Summer (April to October) | Winter (November to March) | |
|---|---|---|
| Ship | Manannan (fast craft) | Manxman (Ben-my-Chree while she’s away) |
| Crossing | 2 hr 45 min | About 4 hr 15 min |
| How often | Daily, two a day into early September | Weekends only |
Sources: the Steam Packet’s Liverpool route page (opens in a new tab) and its 2026–27 schedule announcement (opens in a new tab) (September 2026). On 28 September 2026 the sailing left Douglas at 15:00, arriving in Liverpool at 17:45, and left Liverpool at 19:15, arriving in Douglas at 22:00. Fares start from £26 for a foot passenger and £98.50 for a car, each way, and children under 16 sail free.
Manxman normally covers winter weekends, but she’s been out of service since the summer with propeller-shaft wear. The Steam Packet’s update of 22 September 2026 (opens in a new tab) expected her back in November. Until she is, Ben-my-Chree covers her sailings, so if she misses the first winter weekends, expect Ben-my-Chree at Liverpool instead. Either way, it’s the slow ship.
The terminal

The Isle of Man government built the terminal at Princes Dock, just north of the Pier Head, to replace the old landing stage. Manannan made the first arrival on 25 June 2024 and it opened to passengers the next day. The approved budget was about £70.6 million (gov.im (opens in a new tab)). It’s a big improvement on what came before. There’s a café in the first-floor departure lounge, full security screening and room for up to 1,000 passengers.
- Address: Isle of Man Ferry Terminal, 1 Triskelion Way, Liverpool, L3 0BN. The Steam Packet says some satnavs don’t know that postcode and suggests L3 0AY (Jesse Hartley Way). Follow the road left to the roundabout and on to the terminal. The what3words is famous.tables.spices.
- Opening hours: 09:00–19:15 from March to October, 09:00–16:00 from November to February, varying with the winter ship’s schedule (Steam Packet (opens in a new tab), September 2026).
- Left luggage: £2.50 a bag, on the day of travel only, and only before you check in. Bags are security-screened.
Check-in times
- With a vehicle: check in at the booths. Last check-in is 45 minutes before departure.
- On foot: check in inside the terminal. Last check-in is 25 minutes before departure. With only hand luggage, you can go straight to security.
- When it opens: the Steam Packet’s examples are check-in from 08:45 for an 11:15 sailing, and from 16:45 for a 19:15 sailing, so about two and a half hours ahead.
Getting there without a car
- From Lime Street: the terminal is about 2.3km from Liverpool Lime Street, roughly a 30-minute walk. That’s fine without bags and tedious with them. The train from Euston is covered in London to the Isle of Man.
- The ferry bus: a Liverpool City Council bus starts at Skelhorne Street, stops at Lime Street station and Liverpool ONE bus station, then runs to the terminal. It leaves two hours before each sailing and costs a flat £2, paid on board. It can’t be booked (September 2026).
- Merseyrail: James Street is the nearest station, about 1.35km away.
- Taxis: the Steam Packet lists Delta (0151 924 7373), Alpha (0151 722 8888) and One Call (0151 928 3535). Uber works here too.
Parking
There’s no long-stay parking at the terminal. The car park at the main entrance is for dropping off, picking up and short stays. For longer, the Steam Packet suggests:
- Princes Dock multi-storey, about five minutes’ walk, open 24 hours, with six electric-vehicle charging spaces.
- Q-Park Liverpool ONE, a few minutes’ drive away. The code STEAM gets 10% off (September 2026).
- JustPark, which lets you pre-book spaces on William Jessop Way.
The Steam Packet doesn’t publish prices for any of these, and city-centre rates change, so check each operator’s site for your dates. For a week away, compare them with parking at Heysham, which is £12 a day.
The crossing

Manannan is a big catamaran, and she’s quick. She’s also the ship you feel the sea on. On a flat summer day it’s an easy couple of hours with a coffee. On a lively one, sit low and near the middle and take any seasickness tablets before you board, not after. She’s also the first ship to be cancelled when the wind gets up. If a blow is forecast, check the sailing status (opens in a new tab) before you set off, and see ferry cancellations for what happens next.
On board there’s a café, a bar area, a cinema lounge and a children’s play area, plus reservable lounges including the Premium Lounge, according to the Steam Packet’s fleet page (opens in a new tab).
Day trips
Liverpool is the route for a day on the island. In summer you can sail over in the morning and back in the evening. The Steam Packet’s foot passenger Day Trip fare was from £47 return in autumn 2026 (more offers in cheap ferry fares), and the car Day Trip offer was from £137 each way for a car and four people. How to fill the day is in a day trip to the Isle of Man.
When you land
Liverpool sailings arrive at the Sea Terminal in Douglas. There’s a taxi rank at the front and the Lord Street bus station about 400 metres away. On a late arrival, most of the town will be shutting, so have your accommodation sorted. Buses, trams and trains from Douglas are all covered in getting around the Isle of Man.
