How Steam Packet pricing works and how to pay less — the offer fares, when to book, the cheapest days and sailings, kids go free, foot vs car, and what to know about TT.
There’s one ferry company to the Isle of Man, the Isle of Man Steam Packet, so you can’t shop around. You can still pay a lot less than the person next to you. Fares move with demand, and different ticket types have different rules. This page explains how the pricing works and how to get the price down. For routes and ships, see the ferry guide.
How the pricing works
Three things set what you pay:
- Demand. Fares are “from” prices. The cheap seats go first, and the price climbs as a sailing fills. Every fare the Steam Packet publishes comes with the line “prices vary over time and sailing to sailing”.
- Ticket type. Offer fares (short break, day trip, Starlight and so on) are cheapest, but they tie you to a trip length and can’t be refunded. Flexi fares cost more but let you change dates as often as you like with no amendment fee.
- When and how you book. Weekends cost more in summer, and booking by phone or at a terminal costs more than booking online.
The lowest published fares on the Heysham and Liverpool route pages (opens in a new tab) are £26 for a foot passenger and £98.50 for a car, each way (September 2026).
The offer fares
These are the Steam Packet’s published sailing offers (opens in a new tab), all “from” prices each way (September 2026). The car offers include the car and the number of people shown:
| Car offer | Summer 2026 | Autumn (1 Sept 2026 – 9 Jan 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| Midweek 3 Day Return, car + 2 | Not offered | £104 |
| 5 Day Short Break, car + 2 | £146.50 | £136 |
| Any Length of Stay, car + 2 | £179.50 | £164 |
| Starlight, car + 4 | £210 | £203 |
| Day Trip, car + 4 | £143 | £137 |
- Midweek 3 Day Return: out and back Monday to Thursday, with the return sailing on or before day three.
- 5 Day Short Break: return sailing on or before day five.
- Starlight: both sailings must leave between 18:00 and 03:00. That means evenings and the Heysham night sailing, and they take four people, not two.
- Day Trip: out and back the same day (see a day trip to the Isle of Man), or on the next morning’s 02:15 from Heysham.
For foot passengers, the Saver starts at £27.75 each way and a day trip return at £47. Motorbike offers start at £65.75 each way for bike and rider in autumn. There’s more on those in taking a motorbike on the ferry.
When to book
Early. It’s the one rule that matters. There’s no last-minute deal culture on this route. Since September 2024 you can book offer fares right up to departure (opens in a new tab), where before there was a 24-hour cut-off for foot passengers and 48 hours for vehicles. That’s handy for a spontaneous midweek trip in October. It won’t get you a cheap August Saturday.
For school holidays, bank holidays and anything around TT, book as soon as the timetable for your dates opens.
Which sailings are cheapest
- Monday to Thursday. From 1 April to 30 September there’s a supplement on Friday, Saturday and Sunday sailings.
- Outside summer. The autumn offers above run about £6 to £16 less each way than the summer ones for a car. The bigger saving is that there’s cheap space left to book.
- Unpopular times. The Steam Packet itself says “mid-week or overnight sailings offer the most savings”. The small-hours Heysham sailing is the obvious candidate.
- Try another port. The Steam Packet notes that “a combination of ports should be considered”. Going out from Liverpool and back to Heysham, or the other way round, can be cheaper than a straight return. Price both before you commit.

Kids, students and other discounts
- Kids go free. Since the Steam Packet’s fare reset in October 2024 (opens in a new tab), children aged 0–15 have travelled free on all scheduled sailings, all year. They have to be with an adult, with at least one adult for every seven children. Special event sailings (opens in a new tab) aren’t included. For a family, this matters more than anything else on this page. The rest of the family sums are in an Isle of Man family holiday.
- Students in full-time further or higher education get a fare from £27.75 each way with no weekend supplement and no amendment fees. Quote the fare code when you book and bring student photo ID. The current offer runs until 9 January 2027.
- Flexi fares were cut by 10% in the same 2024 reset. They aren’t the cheapest fare, but if your dates might move, one change fee on an offer fare can wipe out the difference.
Loyalty and residents’ fares. As of September 2026 we couldn’t find a Steam Packet loyalty or points scheme, or a separate fare for Isle of Man residents. The island’s Travel Trade Association has asked for resident fares (opens in a new tab). Residents book the same fares as everyone else.
Foot passenger or car?
Going as a foot passenger is the biggest single saving. A couple going on foot might pay about £52 each way at the cheapest fares, against £98.50 or more for a car. Add the kids-go-free rule and a family on foot pays almost nothing to cross. The island’s buses and heritage railways reach most places worth seeing, and the Go Explore card covers the lot. There’s a tested car-free plan in the Isle of Man without a car. We cover life on foot in more detail in travelling as a foot passenger.
Take the car if you’re staying somewhere rural, or if you’re a family with luggage. Ferry or fly prices both options for a real trip.
TT and the big events
At TT the normal rules stop applying. Sailings sell out months ahead, prices peak, kids don’t go free on special event sailings, and there’s a separate deposit booking process. TT 2027 deposits opened on 18 May 2026. The details are in getting a TT ferry.
Before you book: a checklist
- Price the whole journey, not just the fare (the whole-trip sums are in visiting on a budget). A cheap small-hours sailing from Heysham plus a Morecambe hotel the night before may cost more than a daytime Liverpool sailing.
- Price Heysham and Liverpool, and mixed ports, for your dates.
- Book online, never by phone, unless you have to.
- Pick the offer that matches your trip length.
- Sign up to the Steam Packet newsletter for offers, and check the special offers page (opens in a new tab) before booking. For travel between 2 November and 17 December 2026 or 5 January and 20 March 2027, Visit Isle of Man and Steam Packet Holidays are offering 25% off selected ferry-and-hotel packages (opens in a new tab) (September 2026).

Common questions
When is the cheapest time to book the Steam Packet?
As early as you can. Fares are demand-priced and rise as sailings fill, and there's no culture of last-minute discounts. Offer fares can now be booked right up to departure, but that only helps if there's cheap space left, which on summer weekends there usually isn't.
What is the cheapest day to sail on the Steam Packet?
Monday to Thursday. Between 1 April and 30 September a supplement applies on Friday, Saturday and Sunday sailings, and the cheapest car offer, the Midweek 3 Day Return, only works if you go and come back Monday to Thursday within three days.
Do children travel free on the Steam Packet?
Yes. Children aged 0 to 15 travel free on all scheduled sailings all year, as long as they're with an adult (at least one adult for every seven children). Special event sailings, such as TT, aren't included.
Does the Steam Packet have a loyalty scheme or residents' discount?
Not that we could find in September 2026. There's no points scheme and no separate residents' fare. The Isle of Man Travel Trade Association has asked for resident fares. The discounts that do exist are kids go free, the student fare and the offer fares.
