Fish and chips on the Isle of Man come with better views than most. This page picks the chippies we’ve confirmed are trading in 2026, town by town, with 2026 prices. It explains chips, cheese and gravy for the uninitiated, and tells you where to sit, because on this island the harbour wall is half the meal. Every shop named here had its own website, a 2026 listing or 2026 press coverage when we checked in September 2026.

Peel

Peel is the chips capital, mainly because of where you eat them. The promenade curves round a sandy beach with Peel Castle on its island at the end, and the sun sets straight out to sea.

  • The Cod and Castle, on the promenade. Its name tells you the view. Visit Isle of Man lists it as open every day from 11.30am to 8pm. For Manx Menu March 2026 it served battered Manx queenies with chips, peas and homemade tartare sauce (Business Isle of Man (opens in a new tab)). Ask if they’re still on.
  • The Creek Inn, on the quay, is the indoor option. Its pub menu has featured battered queenies with hake. See our pubs guide.

Douglas and Onchan

  • Terrace Chippy, Woodbourne Road, Douglas. The Handley family have been frying on the island since 1981, and the Terrace is their flagship. It has a takeaway, a sit-down diner and a delivery service. It opens from 11.30am to 10pm every day, with delivery from 4.30pm (terracechippy.com (opens in a new tab)). In March 2026 cod was £8.20 and hake £7.10 to take away (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)). During the TT it opens from 9am to 11pm and serves breakfast.
  • The Islander Chippy, Bucks Road, Douglas. It’s run by the same family and is takeaway only. It’s handy for the town centre.
  • New Cod on the Block, Village Walk, Onchan. A neighbourhood chippy that was open about its prices in January 2026. A small cod meal was under £9 to take away and under £12 to eat in. The eat-in price included bread and butter, a side, tartare sauce and a tea or coffee (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)). Readers of the local paper say both New Cod on the Block and the Terrace do potato scallops.

In Douglas, take them down to the promenade and walk towards the Sea Terminal, or eat in the Terrace’s diner if the wind’s up.

Port Erin and Port St Mary

  • Port Erin Chippy & Diner, Station Road. It’s Port Erin’s only chip shop and a sister to the Terrace. In May 2026 it was praised in The Telegraph by William Sitwell: “The batter is crisp, the flesh flaky, the chips perfect” (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)). He took his down to the benches by the sea, and so should you. The steam railway station is a short walk away.
  • Fresh Fried & Crispy, Station Road, Port St Mary. A small chippy with short hours: Thursday to Saturday, 5.30pm to 8pm, per its own website (opens in a new tab). Don’t turn up on a Monday.

Ramsey, Castletown and Laxey

Each of these towns has chip shops. We couldn’t confirm any of them as trading in 2026 from a website, a 2026 listing or recent press, so we haven’t named them here. Ask locally, or check the shop’s Facebook page before you go. In Castletown, The Garrison does pub food a minute from the harbour.

Chips, cheese and gravy

It’s chips, grated cheese and beef gravy. Isle of Man Today calls it the island’s “unofficial national dish”, and compares it to Canada’s poutine. The Manx version uses island potatoes and Manx cheddar, and chippy owners will tell you that’s why it never tastes the same in England. Mark Handley of the Terrace says you never saw it in his first decade in the trade. His shop used to grate its own cheese, and now it has to buy it ready-grated because it can’t keep up.

Chips, Cheese and Gravy Day is the last Monday in January. It was dreamed up by Gef, the island’s online magazine. Chippies, cafés and diners across the island now run offers, and the queues run all day. In 2026 a portion cost £6 at the Terrace Chippy and Port Erin Chippy (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)). The next one is Monday 25 January 2027. The Terrace doesn’t deliver on the day, so you’ll have to queue.

For the rest of the island’s food, see our Manx food guide.

Why is cod so expensive?

Several island chippies explained their cod prices in 2026, and they gave much the same reasons. Quotas for Barents Sea cod have been cut, sanctions hit the Russian fishing firms that supply much of the UK trade, and energy, staff and transport have all gone up. New Cod on the Block said in January 2026 that it was paying about as much per kilo for cod as for sirloin steak. The island’s answer is hake, a white fish from the cod family, which both the Terrace and New Cod on the Block now sell for about £1 less.

Sit-down fish and chips

If you’d rather have a table and a knife:

  • The Terrace Chippy diner in Douglas, and Port Erin Chippy & Diner.
  • Little Fish Café on Douglas quay does a battered seabass with house chips and tartare sauce for £24 (September 2026). That’s the restaurant version, at a restaurant price. See restaurants.

When is Chips, Cheese and Gravy Day?

The last Monday in January. It started as an idea from the island's online magazine Gef and now has chippies, cafés and pubs running offers all day. In 2026 the Terrace Chippy and Port Erin Chippy sold a portion for £6. The next one is Monday 25 January 2027.

How much are fish and chips on the Isle of Man?

On the promenade or the beach, facing Peel Castle, ideally around sunset. The Cod and Castle is right on the prom. If it's blowing a gale, go for the Creek Inn on the quay, which serves battered fish indoors.
