London to the Isle of Man — flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City, the train-and-ferry route via Liverpool or Heysham, and driving, with 2026 prices.
There’s no avoiding a bit of sea between London and the Isle of Man. You can fly over it in an hour, or spend most of a day on a train and a boat and arrive with change for dinner. This page compares the options: which London airports fly direct, how the rail-and-ferry route works, and when driving makes sense. If you want the side-by-side sums for other starting points, see ferry or fly.

Flight times are from Visit Isle of Man (opens in a new tab) and the airlines, and fares from Loganair (opens in a new tab). Train times and fares are from Trainline (opens in a new tab) and ferry fares from the Steam Packet (opens in a new tab), all checked in September 2026.
The quickest way: fly
Three London airports have direct flights all year, according to the island airport’s route list (opens in a new tab) (September 2026):
- London City (Loganair). About an hour in the air, and the quickest airport to get through. It’s the dearest option: Loganair was advertising fares from £151 each way for autumn 2026.
- Heathrow (Loganair). Around one flight a day, on a turboprop, timetabled at about an hour and a half gate to gate. Useful if you’re coming off a long-haul flight or live west of London. Loganair’s cheapest advertised Heathrow fares were £114–£134 each way, for early 2027 dates.
- Gatwick (easyJet). Usually one or two flights a day, about 75 minutes. Often the cheapest London option if you book early. We couldn’t get a live price, so check easyJet for your dates.
easyJet also flew from Luton in May and June 2026 around the TT. Don’t count on it for other times of year until it’s on sale.
You land at Ronaldsway in the south of the island. The bus to Douglas is £2.80 and takes about 25 minutes. Our airport guide covers the buses, taxis and car hire, and flights to the Isle of Man covers every other route in.
The cheapest way: train and ferry

Via Liverpool (spring to autumn)
- Train from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street. The fastest trains take 2 hours 15 minutes, there are around 54 a day, and advance singles start at £14 if you book ahead (Trainline (opens in a new tab), September 2026).
- Lime Street to the ferry terminal. The Isle of Man Ferry Terminal is at Princes Dock on the waterfront, north of the Pier Head. It’s a longish walk with bags, or a short taxi ride.
- The ferry to Douglas. In season the fast craft Manannan takes 2 hours 45 minutes. Foot passengers pay from £26 each way. You arrive at the Sea Terminal in Douglas town centre, so no island transfer is needed.
For a Friday-to-Monday trip in October 2026, we found a £63.50 return ferry fare on the Friday 19:15 sailing, arriving at 22:00. With two £14 advance trains, that’s about £92 in total. Leave London by mid-afternoon to make that sailing, and allow for the foot-passenger check-in, which closes before departure. Luggage is generous: foot passengers can check in as many bags as they can carry, up to 23kg each. The Liverpool ferry guide covers the terminal.
The catch is the season. The fast craft only does Liverpool from spring to autumn. In winter, Liverpool is weekends only, on a conventional ship that takes 4 hours 15 minutes, and in 2026 the ship schedule has been disrupted by Manxman being out of service (see the Isle of Man ferry).
Via Heysham (all year)
Heysham, near Morecambe, runs every day of the year, including a sailing in the small hours. From London:
- Train from Euston to Lancaster. From 2 hours 24 minutes, with advance singles from £24 (Trainline (opens in a new tab), September 2026).
- Change for Heysham Port. The branch line station is right next to the ferry terminal, but there are only a few trains a day, timed around the sailings. Check National Rail (opens in a new tab) before you rely on one.
- The ferry. 3 hours 45 minutes to Douglas.
It’s slower than Liverpool, but it’s the one that runs all winter, and the night sailing lands you in Douglas early in the morning without paying for a hotel. See the Heysham ferry guide.
Driving
Driving makes sense if you’re staying a week or more, bringing a family’s worth of kit, or coming for the roads on a motorbike. It’s M1 or M40 to the M6 and then either Liverpool (roughly 210 miles from central London) or Heysham, off junction 34 of the M6 (roughly 240 miles). Allow four to five hours without stops, and a lot more on a Friday afternoon.
Car fares on the Steam Packet start at £98.50 each way (September 2026), and a real booking will cost more. A family of four with a car paid £328–£367 return for a week in October half-term when we checked. Heysham has a car park at £12 per 24 hours if you’re leaving the car. Liverpool has no long-stay parking at the terminal.
Once you’re on the island, read driving on the Isle of Man before you set off. Some roads have no speed limit, and the TT changes everything.
Which one?
- Weekend or short break: fly. The rail-and-ferry route eats a day each way.
- A week or more, on a budget: rail and ferry via Liverpool in season, via Heysham in winter.
- Family with luggage, or anyone with a dog: drive and take the ferry.
- TT: book whichever you can get, as early as you can. Flights and sailings for the TT sell out months ahead.
