This is the first job on your healthcare list after you move here, and it takes one visit. Without a GP on the Isle of Man you can’t get a repeat prescription, a referral to a consultant, or a UK hospital appointment booked by Manx Care. The process is simple. The only real trap is leaving it until you’re ill. This page covers what to bring, which practice covers your address, and what happens next. For how the wider system works, see healthcare on the Isle of Man.
What you need
According to Manx Care’s registration page (opens in a new tab) (September 2026):
- A signed application form. It’s called “Application to go on a Doctor’s List”. You can download it (opens in a new tab) or pick one up at the practice reception. Each person fills in their own, and an adult can sign for a child or someone they’re authorised to sign for.
- Photo ID, normally a passport or driving licence. Ramsey Group Practice says plainly that it’s a Health Authority requirement and it won’t register you without it.
- A Manx address in the practice’s area.
The form asks for your NHS number (not your National Insurance number), your previous address, and the name and address of your previous GP. Fill those in properly, because that’s how the practice finds and requests your old records. If you’re coming from outside the UK, it asks for your first UK address where you registered with a GP, if you had one.
There’s also a box to tick for Patient Access, the online service for booking appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions and seeing your record. Tick it. The practice gives you a linkage code at reception.
Which practice covers you
You register with the practice nearest your home, and practices generally only take people with an address inside their boundary. Palatine, for instance, says (opens in a new tab) it covers addresses from Port Grenaugh in the south, west to St Mark’s and St John’s, and north to Injebreck and Baldrine. Castletown takes Castletown, Ballasalla, Colby and Ballabeg. Outside Douglas, there’s normally only one practice for your address. Manx Care publishes a catchment map on its doctors page (opens in a new tab). If your address sits near a boundary, ring the practices before you turn up.
Here are all eleven practices from Manx Care’s directory (September 2026). All are open 8am to 6pm on weekdays, apart from bank holidays.

Sizes vary a lot. Figures for 1 April 2026, reported by Manx.News (opens in a new tab), put Ramsey and Jurby on 14,938 patients, Palatine on 10,125 and Kensington on 9,859. At the other end, Castletown had 4,769 and Ballasalla 4,298. Across the island about 90,000 people are registered.
Are practices taking new patients?
Manx Care’s rules say a practice registers you “as long as the GP Practice list of patients is ‘Open’”, and there’s no published list of which are open or closed. In practice, because each area has so few practices, new residents inside a catchment do get registered. Palatine and Peel both invite new registrations on their websites (September 2026). If a practice tells you its list is closed, call Manx Care’s Primary Care team on +44 1624 642694 (9am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm, weekdays) and ask where you should go.
What happens next
Once your form and ID are accepted, the practice confirms you’re registered and books a new-patient check, usually with a practice nurse or healthcare assistant. At Ramsey you don’t have to wait for that check before seeing a GP if something comes up. The practice also requests your records from your previous surgery.
Appointments work much as they do in England. You phone or book online, and someone triages you before you get a slot. Since August 2026, patients at Peel, Kensington, Snaefell, Finch Hill and Palatine can also get remote telephone consultations (opens in a new tab) with GPs where that’s suitable, after a trial in Ramsey. Face-to-face appointments are still booked when you need one.
Your GP’s surgery closes at 6pm. After that, and at weekends, the out-of-hours service is MEDS on +44 1624 650355. It’s covered, along with 999 and the Ramsey minor injuries unit, in healthcare on the Isle of Man and Noble’s Hospital.
Visitors, seasonal workers and temporary residents
The rules define a temporary resident as someone who, on arrival, intends to stay more than 24 hours but not more than six months.
- UK residents (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) can register with a practice as a temporary resident, for example if you’re here for a season’s work or a long stay with family. Under the reciprocal agreement, treatment you need during the visit is free, apart from the charges Manx residents pay too, such as prescriptions. Ramsey Group Practice says temporary patients need to re-register after three months, or register permanently.
- Visitors from outside the UK can see a GP as private patients (opens in a new tab) and pay at the time for the consultation, treatment and any prescription. Castletown Medical Centre lists private consultation fees from £25 to £135, depending on the service (September 2026). Only emergency treatment in A&E is generally free.
- If you’re here on holiday and need a doctor for something that can’t wait, ring the nearest practice and ask about a temporary-resident appointment. Evenings and weekends, call MEDS.
If you’re coming to live here permanently, register as a permanent patient straight away, even if your first weeks are in temporary accommodation. Update your address with the practice once you move.

Common questions
How do I register with a GP on the Isle of Man?
Fill in the "Application to go on a Doctor's list" form, which is on gov.im or at any practice reception. Sign it and take it to the practice nearest your home with photo ID, normally a passport or driving licence. The practice will confirm your registration and book a new-patient check.
Can I register with a GP before I move to the Isle of Man?
Not in practice. Practices only register people with an address inside their area, so you need somewhere to live on the island first. Bring enough repeat medication to cover the gap, and register in your first week.
Can I choose which GP practice to register with?
Only in the sense that you register where you live. Each practice has a catchment area and generally only takes people with an address inside it. In Douglas there are several practices, so you may have a choice there. Elsewhere there's usually just one.
Can visitors see a GP on the Isle of Man?
UK residents staying between 24 hours and six months can register with a practice as a temporary resident and are treated free under the reciprocal agreement, apart from normal charges such as prescriptions. Visitors from outside the UK can be seen as private patients and pay at the time.
