Last checked
Ronaldsway, the Isle of Man's only airport — parking prices, buses to Douglas with fares and times, taxis, car hire, the steam railway halt and how early to arrive.
On the map
- Isle of Man Airport terminal — Bus stand 45 metres from the main door; turn left as you come out
- Ronaldsway Halt (Steam Railway) — Request stop about five minutes' walk from the terminal; seasonal
- Ballasalla station — Next proper station north, with buses on the main road outside
- Castletown station (Steam Railway)
Isle of Man Airport is at Ronaldsway, on the south coast between Ballasalla and Castletown. Everyone just calls it Ronaldsway. It’s the island’s only airport, it’s small, and it’s pleasantly short on queues. This page covers what you need on the ground: getting to and from it, parking, taxis, car hire and how early to turn up. For airlines and routes, see flights to the Isle of Man.
The short version
- Getting to Douglas: the bus, £2.80, about 25 minutes. Taxis wait outside for every flight.
- Going south: buses run the other way to Castletown, Port Erin and Port St Mary for £1.40–£2.00.
- Parking: pay in advance on RingGo. Up to 30 minutes is free with a disc in the standard car park.
- Arrive: two hours before your flight is the airport’s advice.
- Car hire: three desks in arrivals. Book ahead in summer and at TT.
The terminal
The terminal opens at 05:30 and stays open until the last flight (airport.im (opens in a new tab)). It’s a single, compact building with Bryan Kneale’s big Three Legs of Man sculpture out the front. There’s not much to kill time on:
- Café Oasis, the café.
- WHSmith for papers, snacks and last-minute phone chargers.
- The information desk, on your left as you come out of baggage reclaim. It sells Go Explore and bus-only Go Saver cards, and takes card payments for parking.
- Assistance: the airport supports the Sunflower lanyard scheme for hidden disabilities and can help you through security if you ask. The rest of the trip is covered in accessible Isle of Man.
Don’t expect a shopping centre or a proper sit-down lounge. The upside is that from the car park to the gate is a few minutes’ walk.
Security and how early to arrive
The airport’s own guidance is to arrive at least two hours before your flight (airport.im travel tips (opens in a new tab)). That can feel excessive for a building this size, and on a quiet weekday morning it often is. But in August 2026 it warned of long queues (opens in a new tab) and asked people to allow the full two hours. Your airline sets the check-in and bag-drop deadlines, so check those.
Security still runs the old liquid rules (airport.im security (opens in a new tab), September 2026):
- Liquids, gels and aerosols in containers of 100ml or less, all in one clear resealable bag no bigger than 20cm by 20cm.
- Laptops and anything electrical larger than A5 come out of your bag and go in a separate tray.
- ID rules depend on the airline. See passports and ID for what each one asks for.
Buses to Douglas and the south

The bus stand is less than 45 metres from the main entrance: turn left as you come out. Every service leaves from the same stand, so read the front of the bus.
- To Douglas: routes 1, 1h, 2, 2a, 11 and 11a go into Douglas via Victoria Street and along the promenade to Onchan. At busy times there’s a bus every 20 minutes, and it takes about 25 minutes to Victoria Street.
- To the south: buses go the other way to Castletown, then Port Erin and Port St Mary, either via Colby or via Shore Road.
- To Peel direct: route 8/8s runs Peel – Foxdale – Castletown – Port Erin and stops at the airport entrance rather than the terminal stand. There are only four or five a day.
- To Laxey, Ramsey or Peel via Douglas: get off at Victoria Street in Douglas and walk the 125 metres or so to the Lord Street bus interchange.

| Port Erin, Port St Mary, Colby | £2.00 |
| Central Douglas | £2.80 |
| Douglas promenades, Onchan | £3.30 |

First and last buses. On the Monday to Saturday timetable the first bus from the terminal to Douglas leaves at 05:58 and the last at 22:06. Going the other way, the last bus from Douglas that actually calls at the terminal leaves Lord Street at 21:40; a later one only serves the Freeport stop on the edge of the airfield. On Sundays the buses run about every 30 minutes through the day. Check the current timetable on findmybus.im (opens in a new tab) for your date.
The steam railway halt

Ronaldsway Halt, on the Isle of Man Steam Railway, is about a five-minute walk from the terminal (airport.im (opens in a new tab)). It’s a request stop: wave at the driver to get on, and tell the guard if you want to get off. Trains run to Douglas one way and Castletown and Port Erin the other.
It’s lovely, and it’s no use as a transfer. The railway only runs in the heritage season (in 2026, until 1 November), a handful of times a day, and a suitcase on a gravel platform is nobody’s idea of fun. Do it on a day out, not with your luggage.
Taxis
There’s a rank directly outside the terminal, and taxis meet every incoming flight (airport.im taxis (opens in a new tab)). Rank taxis are metered. The island’s tariff changed on 22 April 2026 (opens in a new tab):
- Daytime: £4.00 to start, then by distance (about £23.40 for 10 miles).
- 11pm to 6am: £4.70 to start (about £35.60 for 10 miles).
- Extras: 80p per additional passenger and 80p per bag in the boot, plus £2 on any journey from the airport (gov.im tariff card (opens in a new tab)).
By our reckoning from the tariff, that puts a daytime metered ride into central Douglas at about £22–26, including the airport charge (September 2026). That’s an estimate, not a quote. If you want certainty, book a fixed fare with one of the 14 local firms on the airport’s list. Several have six- and eight-seaters, and one has a 13-seater. Book ahead for early flights, late arrivals and anything around TT, when taxis are scarce. Our taxis guide has more.
Car hire
Three firms have desks in the arrivals hall (airport.im car hire (opens in a new tab), September 2026):
| Firm | What it is |
|---|---|
| Athol Car Hire | Local Nissan dealer with its own hire fleet |
| Hertz Isle of Man | Hertz |
| Mylchreests | Local firm, agents for Avis, Europcar and Thrifty |
Cars go early in summer and very early for TT. Book when you book your flight. Prices and the airport-versus-Douglas question are covered in car hire. Ask for a parking disc when you collect the car, because you’ll need one in most towns. Our driving guide explains the rest.
Parking
All parking is paid in advance through RingGo: in the app, online, by phone, or by card at the information desk. There are more than 580 spaces, open 24 hours. Don’t pay and it’s a £60 penalty, or your car gets moved (airport.im parking (opens in a new tab), September 2026).
| Stay | Standard (green) | Premium (red) |
|---|---|---|
| Drop-off | 30 min free with a disc | 15 min free with a disc |
| Up to 2 hours | £2.50 | £3.00 |
| Up to 24 hours | £15 | £17 |
| Up to 7 days | £50 | £54 |
| Long stays | £90 for 15–90 days | £119 up to 20 days, £120 for 21–90 |
Premium is the car park nearest the door. Motorbikes pay half the standard rate. Blue Badge holders park free for an hour with badge and disc displayed, then pay the standard rate. After a free disc stay you can’t come back for another free one within two hours.
