Noble's Hospital at Strang, its A&E, the Ramsey minor injuries unit and the out-of-hours doctors — where to go in a hurry, plus parking, buses, visiting and UK transfers.
On the map
- Noble's Hospital (A&E and MEDS) — The island's only A&E, open 24 hours. MEDS is in the Diabetes Centre behind it.
- Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital — Minor injuries unit, Mon–Fri 8am–8pm. Cumberland Road, off Bowring Road.
The Isle of Man has one A&E, at Noble’s Hospital on the edge of Douglas. It’s open 24 hours, for residents and visitors alike. Around it sit a minor injuries unit in Ramsey, an out-of-hours GP service, the pharmacies and a system for sending patients to Liverpool for the things the island can’t do itself.
This page puts the “where do I go right now” answer first, then the practical detail: parking, buses, visiting and transfers to the UK. For how Manx healthcare works overall, see healthcare on the Isle of Man.

MEDS, the out-of-hours doctors
The Manx Emergency Doctor Service covers the hours when GP surgeries are closed: 6pm to midnight on weekdays (the phone line closes at 11:45pm, or earlier if it’s busy) and 24 hours at weekends and on bank holidays. Overnight on weekdays there is no MEDS, so it’s A&E or 999.
It isn’t a drop-in. You ring, a receptionist takes your details, a clinician triages you, and the outcome is phone advice, an appointment, a home visit or a prescription sent to a pharmacy. If you’re given an appointment, it’s in the Diabetes Centre behind A&E at Noble’s, and you have to get yourself there.
Noble’s Hospital
Noble’s is at Strang, Braddan, IM4 4RJ, on the western edge of Douglas. It opened in 2003, replacing the old Noble’s on Westmoreland Road, and it’s run by Manx Care. As well as A&E it has intensive care, maternity (the Jane Crookall Maternity Unit), a children’s ward, cardiac and stroke care, oncology, trauma and orthopaedics and most of the island’s outpatient clinics. The switchboard is 01624 650000, 24 hours.

A&E
Every patient is triaged by a nurse and seen in order of need. Manx Care asks you not to use A&E for coughs and colds, old injuries, questions about your medicines, toothache, or because you can’t get a GP appointment until tomorrow.
Be ready to wait. In February 2026 only 57% of patients were seen within the four-hour standard, and 311 people, nearly one in ten, waited 12 hours or more, according to figures given in Tynwald (Manx.News, April 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Take a phone charger, anything you need to eat or drink, and your medication.
Parking
There’s a visitors’ car park opposite the main entrance, with disabled bays at the front of the hospital, beside the Day Care Unit and at the rear by the chiropody clinic. You can drop off at the main entrance. We found no parking charges at either hospital (September 2026). The nearest car park to MEDS is the one outside A&E.
Getting there by bus
Several Bus Vannin routes stop at the main entrance. According to gov.im (opens in a new tab), the 5 and 6 run every day, evenings included, between the hospital and lower Douglas. Other routes call during the day on weekdays. Route numbers and times change with the seasonal timetable, so check bus.im (opens in a new tab) before you rely on one. There’s more on the network in buses on the Isle of Man.
By car from Douglas, take Peel Road to Quarterbridge, then turn right at the roundabout by Braddan church. The hospital is signposted from there.
Visiting
From the Noble’s Hospital page (opens in a new tab) (September 2026):
| Ward | Visiting |
|---|---|
| Adult wards | 2pm–8pm daily, up to two visitors at a time |
| Children’s ward (Ward 3) | Parents and guardians any time; up to two other visitors 3pm–7pm |
| Maternity | Birth partner 10am–8pm; other visitors 2pm–4pm, two at a time including the partner |
Nurses can be flexible for end-of-life care and for patients who need extra support. Don’t visit if you’ve got a respiratory bug or have had diarrhoea or vomiting. The whole site is non-smoking, car park included.
Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital
The north’s hospital, on Cumberland Road, Ramsey, IM8 3RH (01624 811811). It covers roughly everything from Laxey to Kirk Michael, and has an inpatient ward, physiotherapy, some minor surgery and, most usefully, the Minor Injury and Illness Unit.
The unit is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, with the last book-in at 7:30pm, and it has X-ray on site (September 2026). During TT and other race periods it opens seven days a week. It spent the winter of 2025–26 moved into Noble’s while the Ramsey building had its roof repaired, and it reopened on 18 May 2026 (opens in a new tab), in time for TT.
- Getting in: there’s a steep slope up to the main entrance (the revolving blue door). If that’s a problem, use the Martin Ward entrance and walk along the corridor to reception.
- Parking: free, at the front, by Martin Ward and at the rear.
- By bus: the 3 or 3A from Douglas to Ramsey bus station, then a 17, 17B, 18 or 19 to the hospital stop on Bowring Road (gov.im (opens in a new tab), September 2026).
Treatment off the island
Major trauma, many cancer treatments, burns, transplants and complex heart surgery aren’t done on the island. A Noble’s consultant refers you to a hospital in north-west England, mostly in Liverpool, and the Patient Transfer Office (opens in a new tab) (01624 642673, weekdays 9am–5pm, closed 1pm–2pm) books the flight or sailing once you have your appointment letter. What’s paid for, including hotels and escorts, is in healthcare on the Isle of Man.
In an emergency, patients are flown out by air ambulance, and Manx Care publishes guidance for families (opens in a new tab). Out of hours, ring 01624 650000 and ask for the Air Ambulance Coordinator.
Visitors
A&E is there for everyone on the island, visitors included. What you’ll pay for, and what the UK’s reciprocal agreement does and doesn’t cover, is in travel insurance for the Isle of Man. If you’ve forgotten your tablets, see prescriptions.
