If you’re self-catering on the Isle of Man, or you’ve just moved here, this is the page for where to do the shopping. The short answer is Tesco, which owns most of the big supermarkets on the island. There’s a Co-op or a SPAR in nearly every town and village for everything else. This page covers what’s where, when it opens, what it costs, who delivers, and a few tips for your first shop. For what’s worth buying once you’re there, see our Manx produce guide.

The short version

Chain Stores Best for
Tesco 10, in every town The big shop
Co-op About a dozen, mostly small Top-ups, village shopping
SPAR Convenience stores across the island Top-ups, late opening, delivery
M&S One food hall, central Douglas Treats, ready meals
Robinson’s Food hall on Cooil Road, shop in central Douglas Fresh fish, fruit and veg, Manx produce

What happened to Shoprite

For decades the island’s own supermarket chain was Shoprite. In October 2023 Tesco bought all nine Shoprite stores, which took it from one store on the island to ten. The stores kept trading as Shoprite through a transition period and were converted one by one. The last ones closed for refitting in June 2024 (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)). The final conversion, the old Winerite wine warehouse on Victoria Road in Douglas, reopened as a Tesco Express in February 2025. If a website, a holiday-let welcome pack or a relative tells you to “pop to Shoprite”, it’s out of date.

Tesco

Tesco now has ten stores on the island. Store names below follow the list Tesco gave for Easter 2026 (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)).

Onchan Birch Hill Supermarket
Peel Derby Road Superstore, opened October 2024

Opening hours (September 2026):

  • Lake Road, Douglas: Monday to Saturday 7am–11pm, Sunday 8am–8pm, according to Tesco’s store page.
  • Peel, Derby Road: Monday to Saturday 7am–10pm, Sunday 8am–8pm, from when it opened (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)).
  • Express stores in Douglas, Peel, Ramsey and Castletown: 7am–10pm, seven days a week.
  • Others: check the Tesco store locator (opens in a new tab) before you set off. Hours change at bank holidays and around TT.

Tesco has added more Manx products since the takeover. In November 2025 it started stocking a Manx beef and pork range from Isle of Man Meats, and Manx cheese, milk, butter and beer are on the shelves too.

Co-op, SPAR and the smaller shops

  • Co-op. The island’s Co-op has traded since 1920, when it opened on Duke Street in Douglas, and is part of the UK Co-op Group (Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab)). It has about a dozen stores, including Douglas, Onchan, Ramsey, Peel, Castletown, Port Erin, Port St Mary and Laxey. Most are convenience-sized. In a village, it’s often the only shop.
  • SPAR. Run on the island by Mannin Retail since 1979, from a distribution centre at Kewaigue. There are SPARs in towns, villages and on Central Promenade in Douglas. SPAR makes a point of Manx suppliers: the Creamery, Gellings eggs, Okell’s, Laxey Glen Mills, Isle of Man Meats and Davison’s ice cream (SPAR Isle of Man (opens in a new tab)).
  • M&S. The town-centre Marks & Spencer in Douglas, where Strand Street meets Drumgold Street, finished a nine-month refit in April 2026. The food hall is 50% bigger, with a bakery, a cheese counter and a wine shop. It’s open Monday to Saturday 8am–7pm and Sunday 8am–6pm (M&S (opens in a new tab)). The old café has gone.
  • Robinson’s Fresh Foods. A family firm since 1886, and the best fish counter and greengrocery on the island. The big food hall is on Cooil Road, just outside Douglas: Monday to Friday 8am–6pm, Saturday 8am–5pm and Sunday 10am–4pm. There’s also a shop on Prospect Terrace in the town centre (robinsons.im (opens in a new tab)).

Sunday and late opening

Sunday shopping is easy. In England a big shop can only open for six hours on a Sunday. Here the Lake Road Tesco opens 8am–8pm and the Express stores 7am–10pm. Tesco’s island stores even opened on Easter Sunday in 2026. Smaller Co-ops and independents keep shorter hours, especially in villages and in winter, so check before you rely on one late at night.

Prices compared with the UK

Expect to pay about what you’d pay in the UK, and sometimes a little more. The island has the same VAT rate as the UK. But almost everything on the shelves has crossed the Irish Sea, and not every UK deal makes it over. Tesco’s own help pages have excluded the Isle of Man from some Clubcard Prices offers, so don’t assume a promotion you saw at home applies here. We couldn’t find a reliable, up-to-date comparison of a basket of shopping, so we won’t pretend to give you a percentage. For the bigger picture, see the cost of living if you live here, or budget if you’re visiting.

What’s good value: Manx milk, cheese, butter, eggs and flour, which are made here and priced like everyday staples.

Delivery

  • Tesco runs online home delivery on the island. Book ahead for busy weeks such as TT.
  • SPAR delivers through the Snappy Shopper (opens in a new tab) app.
  • Isle of Man Creamery does doorstep deliveries of milk and dairy, which mostly suits residents.
  • The Isle of Man Farm Shop at Glen Helen delivers Manx produce through the Dazzler app. See Manx produce.
  • Everything else: for ordering from UK online shops, see parcel delivery.

Tips for self-caterers

  • Arriving by ferry: the Lake Road Tesco is the closest big supermarket to the Sea Terminal. It’s next to the steam railway station and the bus station at the south end of Douglas, so do the big shop before you head out of town.
  • Arriving by plane: the airport is near Castletown, which has a Tesco Express. For a full shop, the nearest big stores are in Douglas and Port Erin.
  • Staying in the north or the west: Ramsey and Peel each have a full-size Tesco and an Express. The villages in between have smaller shops.
  • During TT: the island’s population swells, and shops get busy. Do a big shop on arrival and top up at quiet times.
  • Local beer and gin: most supermarkets stock Okell’s and Bushy’s. For the small brewers, see beer and gin.

Common questions

What supermarkets are there on the Isle of Man?

Tesco is the main one, with ten stores, including large ones in Douglas, Onchan, Peel, Ramsey and Port Erin. There are also Co-op and SPAR convenience stores across the island, an M&S food hall in Douglas and Robinson's fresh food hall outside Douglas. There's no Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Sainsbury's or Morrisons.

Is there still a Shoprite on the Isle of Man?

No. Tesco bought all nine Shoprite stores in October 2023 and converted them over the following months. The last Shoprites closed in June 2024. The old Winerite in Douglas reopened as a Tesco Express in February 2025.

Are supermarkets open on Sundays on the Isle of Man?

Yes, and for longer than in England. The Lake Road Tesco in Douglas opens 8am to 8pm on Sundays, and the Tesco Express stores open 7am to 10pm. Tesco's big stores opened on Easter Sunday for the first time in 2026.

Is food more expensive on the Isle of Man than in the UK?

Often a little, but it depends what you buy. The island charges the same VAT as the UK, but almost everything comes over by sea, and Tesco's island stores don't get every UK Clubcard offer. Manx staples such as milk, cheese, butter and eggs are good value.

Can you get supermarket delivery on the Isle of Man?

Yes. Tesco runs online home delivery on the island, and SPAR delivers through the Snappy Shopper app. It's worth booking a Tesco slot for your arrival day if you're self-catering and don't want to shop after a ferry crossing.
