Mobile phones on the Isle of Man: Manx networks and the roaming catch

The island's two mobile networks, what a Manx SIM costs (September 2026), coverage, 5G, and why living here on a UK SIM or a Manx one comes with roaming catches.

Your mobile is usually where you first notice the Isle of Man isn’t part of the UK. The island has its own two networks and its own numbers. Your UK SIM roams here, and a Manx SIM roams when you go back across. This page is for people who live here, or are about to move. If you’re just visiting, you want phones and roaming for visitors instead.

The two networks

There are two mobile networks, and CURA, the regulator, names only these two (opens in a new tab):

  • Manx Telecom, the island’s original phone company. It was bought by Jersey’s JT Group and the investor CVC DIF in May 2026 (opens in a new tab). The name is staying.
  • Sure, which built its own mobile network here in 2007 and now trades as “Sure by Beyon”, after the Bahraini group that owns it.

Both run their own masts, so you really are choosing a network, not just a price plan. Numbers mostly start 07624, and some start 07425 or 07924. They’re part of the UK numbering plan, so they look ordinary to UK callers. Whether a UK plan counts calls to them as inclusive varies by UK network: check before your family runs up a bill.

What it costs (September 2026)

SIM-only plans, from the providers’ own sites:

Plan Price a month Data Roaming included
Sure Start £17 2GB local None
Sure Connect £26 Unlimited local (capped at 10Mbps) 5GB, 100 mins in the UK, EU and USA
Sure Freedom £32 Unlimited local (up to 50Mbps) 10GB, 500 mins in the UK, EU and USA
Sure Signature £39 Unlimited local (full speed) 50GB, 1,000 mins in the UK, EU and USA
Manx Telecom Smart Islander £22.51 1GB None
Manx Telecom GoRoam Essential £31.08 15GB 6GB, 50 mins in the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands and EU
Manx Telecom GoRoam Plus £38.40 100GB 16GB, 300 mins in the same zones
Manx Telecom GoRoam Ultra £49.57 Unlimited 40GB, 600 mins in the same zones

Sources: Sure’s pay monthly plans (opens in a new tab) and Manx Telecom’s SIM-only tariffs (opens in a new tab).

Manx Telecom’s SIM-only prices are for a 36-month term. Sure offers terms from one month to 36 months, and its prices rise each year in line with the island’s RPI. Both sell pay as you go as well. Sure takes £10–£30 a month off fibre broadband if you also have one of its mobile plans, which can outweigh the difference in the table.

The roaming catch, both ways

A Manx SIM roams in the UK. Both networks treat the UK as a roaming zone. On Sure, use outside your allowance costs 65p a minute and 65p a megabyte (opens in a new tab) at standard rates (September 2026), less with a roaming add-on. Pay monthly plans have a £50 spend limit by default. So if you work across or visit family often, the UK allowance is the part of the plan that matters. The cheapest plans on both networks include none at all.

A UK SIM roams here. How much that costs depends on your network and when you signed up. Vodafone includes the island in its free-roaming Zone A for pay monthly customers. EE charges a daily fee on most contracts started after July 2021. O2 includes it for pay monthly customers but not pay as you go. Most budget networks like giffgaff or Smarty treat it as out of bundle. The visitor page has the network-by-network detail.

For residents, the bigger problem is fair use. UK roaming is meant for holidays. O2, for example, can add a surcharge if you use your phone abroad on 63 days or more in any four months. Manx Telecom warns (opens in a new tab) that people living on the island on UK SIMs are being charged under those rules. You can’t reliably live here on a UK contract.

Keeping or changing your number

  • Between the two Manx networks: switching is free and you keep your number (opens in a new tab). You can’t switch again within 60 days. If the new network doesn’t give you the coverage it promised, you can reverse the switch within 30 days. Pay monthly customers still owe whatever is left on the old contract, and pay as you go credit doesn’t transfer.
  • Off the island: CURA says a Manx 07624 number can’t be ported to a provider off the island. Plan for that if you’re only here for a few years.
  • UK number to a Manx network: don’t count on it. Ask the network before you cancel anything, and keep the UK number on a cheap plan in the meantime.

Coverage

The towns and main roads are fine on both networks. Signal gets weaker in the deeper glens, on the hills and in the far north and west. Neither network promises much on the mountain away from the masts.

Signal isn’t always the problem, though. In summer 2026 complaints grew about 4G that showed full bars but loaded nothing. Manx Telecom’s chief executive told Isle of Man Today (opens in a new tab) (July 2026) that it was upgrading 11 sites and had planning applications ready for eight more. He asked customers to report exact places and times so engineers could test them. Sure warned of temporary disruption while it replaces masts.

Before you commit to a contract, check both networks’ coverage maps for your home and your commute. Borrow a friend’s SIM on the other network if you can, because coverage maps are optimistic about indoor signal in thick-walled Manx cottages.

5G

There’s no public 5G yet. Sure (opens in a new tab) is spending £48 million on a new network with Ericsson, with 5G due to start in 2026. Manx Telecom’s new owners plan to replace its network (opens in a new tab) at a cost of £20–30 million, with about 20 more masts. It says 5G work should start in 2027, if the new masts get through planning. BlueWave already runs a private 5G network, but for businesses and events, not phones.

Common questions

What mobile networks are there on the Isle of Man?

Two, Manx Telecom and Sure. Both run their own masts and sell pay monthly and pay as you go. BlueWave runs a private 5G network for businesses, but doesn't sell phone plans to the public.

Can I keep my UK mobile number if I move to the Isle of Man?

Don't count on it — ask before you cancel anything. The simple answer is to keep your UK number on a cheap UK plan or eSIM alongside a Manx SIM. CURA also says a Manx 07624 number can't be ported to an off-island provider, so the same applies in reverse if you leave.

Is there 5G on the Isle of Man?

Not a public service, as of September 2026. Sure is part-way through a £48 million network rebuild that includes 5G, and Manx Telecom's chief executive has said 5G work should start in 2027. BlueWave runs a private 5G network for business use.

Does my Manx SIM work in the UK?

Yes, but it's roaming. Both Manx networks count the UK as a roaming zone, so use outside your plan's UK allowance is charged extra. Sure's standard rate is 65p a minute and 65p a megabyte (September 2026). Choose a plan with UK minutes and data included if you're across often.
