What Isle of Man Guru collects, what it does not, and who else sees anything when you visit.
Last updated 6 October 2026.
The short version
- No accounts, no newsletter, no comments, no forms. Nothing to log into.
- No cookies of our own, and no advertising or tracking cookies.
- Cookieless visitor statistics from Cloudflare and from our own analytics server, which don't identify you or follow you around the web.
- A few outside services see your IP address when your browser fetches something from them: our host, and the map on some pages. Details below.
- If you email us, we have your email. That's it.
Who we are
Isle of Man Guru is a small independent website. For data protection purposes its publisher is the controller of the little personal data described here, and can be reached at [email protected].
What we collect
Visitor statistics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see which pages get read. It's cookieless: it records page views, the page you came from, your browser type and rough country-level location, and it doesn't fingerprint your device or track you across other websites. We only ever see totals, never individuals. Because it sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, there's no consent banner.
We also run Plausible, an open-source analytics tool, on a server of our own, so the data never goes to an analytics company. It's cookieless too. It records which pages you view, your browser and device type, the page you came from and your rough location. To count unique visitors without a cookie it uses an anonymous ID that resets every day, so it can't recognise you from one day to the next.
Server logs
The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes standard request data, including your IP address, to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. We don't use that data to identify anyone.
If you email us, we get your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use it to reply and to fix whatever you've told us about, and nothing else: no mailing list, no passing it on. We delete correspondence we no longer need.
Cookies
We set no cookies of our own. Some sites you reach from here may set their own; see affiliate links below.
Other services your browser talks to
Fonts and photographs are served from our own site, so loading a page doesn't tell Google or anyone else what you're reading. The exceptions:
- Maps. Some guides have a map. When you scroll to it, your browser loads the map software from unpkg and the map tiles from OpenStreetMap, which means both see your IP address and which part of the island you're looking at. No cookies are set. If you'd rather avoid it, the same places are listed as plain links with JavaScript turned off.
- Cloudflare, as host and for the visitor statistics described above.
Affiliate links
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you follow one to a ferry operator, hotel or car hire company and go on to book, that company may pay us a small commission at no extra cost to you. To make that work, the link may carry a tracking code and the destination site may set a cookie recording that you arrived from us. We're told a booking happened and what commission it earned; we aren't told who you are.
Once you leave Isle of Man Guru you're on someone else's site, under their privacy policy, not ours. We have no control over and no access to whatever they collect.
Adverts
There are none at the moment. If that changes, this page will be updated first, and if an ad network needs cookies you'll be asked before any are set.
Your rights
Under Isle of Man and UK data protection law you can ask what personal data we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. For most visitors the honest answer is none, but if you'd like to check or make a request, email [email protected] and we'll respond within a month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Isle of Man Information Commissioner, or to the ICO if you're in the UK. We'd appreciate the chance to sort it out first.
Children
The site isn't aimed at children and we don't knowingly collect anything from them. There's nothing here for anyone to sign up to anyway.
Changes
If we change how the site works in a way that affects your privacy, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change goes live.
