The Heysham to Douglas ferry explained — getting to the port by car or train, parking at £12 a day, check-in times, the terminal and the small-hours night sailing.
On the map
- Douglas Sea Terminal — Where the Heysham boat lands. Taxi rank at the front
- Lord Street bus station — About 400m from the Sea Terminal
- Douglas Railway Station — Steam railway to Castletown and Port Erin, at the inner end of the harbour
Heysham is where most cars leave England for the Isle of Man. It’s the only English port with a sailing every day of the year, it’s close to the M6, and parking is cheap. It’s not a pretty place to wait: an industrial harbour next door to a nuclear power station. This page covers the practical stuff: getting there by road or rail, parking, check-in, the terminal and the night sailing. For the other routes and the ships, see the Isle of Man ferry.

Figures from the Steam Packet’s Heysham route page (opens in a new tab) (September 2026). On 28 September 2026 the sailings from Heysham were at 02:02 and 14:15, and from Douglas at 08:22 and 19:45. Times move from season to season, so check your own dates.
Getting there by road
The port is on South Quay, Heysham, LA3 2XE, about four miles south-west of Morecambe. From the M6, come off at junction 34 for Lancaster and follow the Bay Gateway link road west towards Heysham, then signs for the port. It’s a straightforward drive, and the last few minutes take you past the power station and the freight yards. That’s normal. You’re in the right place.
Car passengers check in at the vehicle booths. Last check-in is 45 minutes before departure. If you arrive early for the afternoon sailing, the booths open a little over two hours before (11:30 for a 13:45 departure, going by the Steam Packet’s example).
Parking at Heysham
The port car park is run by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, not the Steam Packet, and costs £12 per 24 hours (September 2026, per the Steam Packet’s Heysham page (opens in a new tab)). A week is about £84, which is often cheaper than taking the car over for a short trip. More on that below.
During TT, parking is first come, first served and space is limited. If you’re going over as a foot passenger for the racing, get dropped off or arrive early.
Getting there by train and bus

Heysham Port station is right beside the passenger terminal, with step-free access through to it. The catch is the service. Community Rail Lancashire (opens in a new tab) describes it as one train a day to and from Leeds, via Morecambe, for the Isle of Man sailing. It’s an unstaffed platform with a shelter. Check the times on National Rail (opens in a new tab) against your sailing before you rely on it. If they don’t line up, and for the night boat they won’t, the realistic plan is a train to Lancaster or Morecambe, then a taxi.
The Steam Packet lists two local firms: Eden Taxis (01524 420000) and Heysham 848 Taxis (01524 848848). The nearest bus stop is on Combermere Road, about 1.3km from the terminal, served by Stagecoach. That’s a long walk with a suitcase.
Check-in and the terminal
Foot passengers check in inside the passenger terminal. Last check-in is 25 minutes before departure. If you’ve only got hand luggage, you can go straight to security with your booking QR code. Bigger bags are checked in and go on the car deck. You won’t see them again until Douglas.
The terminal only opens around sailings. The Steam Packet gives these hours (September 2026):
| Days | Daytime | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 11:00–16:30 | 22:30–02:30 |
| Saturday and Sunday | 11:00–14:00 | 22:30–02:30 |
It’s a waiting room with a check-in desk, not somewhere to spend an afternoon. If you’re early, Morecambe’s seafront is a short drive away, and the ship has food on board.

The night sailing
The small-hours departure (around 02:00, depending on the timetable) gets you into Douglas at about 05:30 to 06:00, and saves a night’s accommodation. Check-in opens late the previous evening, at 22:30 for the 01:45 departure in the Steam Packet’s example. The Steam Packet’s Starlight car offers (see cheap ferry fares), for sailings between 18:00 and 03:00, make it one of the cheaper ways over with a car. In autumn 2026 they were from £203 each way for a car and four people.
Whether you get any sleep depends on the ship. Manxman has cabins. While Ben-my-Chree is covering, cabin bookings have been moved to the lounges or refunded, so for now it’s a reclining seat in the Niarbyl or Premium lounge, or whatever bench you can claim. Bring a neck pillow and low expectations.
Staying nearby
If your sailing is early or you’re coming a long way, stay the night before in Morecambe or Lancaster rather than at the port. The obvious treat is the Midland Hotel (opens in a new tab) on Morecambe seafront. It’s a Grade II* listed 1933 Art Deco hotel, run by English Lakes Hotels, and about 15 minutes’ drive from the terminal. Otherwise, Morecambe and Lancaster have the usual spread of B&Bs and chain hotels. Pick one with parking and an easy run back to the Bay Gateway.
Heysham or Liverpool?
- Heysham if you’re coming from the north, Scotland or Yorkshire, if it’s winter, if you want the night sailing, or if you want cheap parking.
- Liverpool if you’re coming from the south or the Midlands and it’s the summer season, when the fast craft makes it an hour quicker. See the Liverpool ferry guide.
In winter, when Liverpool drops to weekends on the slower conventional ship, there’s not much in it on time and Heysham usually wins on everything else.
When you land
Every Heysham sailing arrives at the Sea Terminal in Douglas. There’s a taxi rank at the front, and the Lord Street bus station is about 400 metres away. Drivers are straight onto the promenade. If you’re driving here for the first time, read driving on the Isle of Man.

Common questions
How much is parking at Heysham port?
£12 per 24 hours at the port car park, which is run by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (September 2026). During TT it's first come, first served and fills up.
Can you get a train to Heysham ferry port?
Yes, but barely. Heysham Port station is right next to the terminal, but it only gets about one train a day each way, via Morecambe and Lancaster. Check National Rail before you rely on it, or get a taxi from Lancaster or Morecambe.
What time is the Heysham night ferry?
It leaves Heysham in the small hours, around 02:00 to 02:15 depending on the timetable, and gets into Douglas between about 05:30 and 06:00. Check-in opens late the previous evening.
How early do you need to be at Heysham for the ferry?
Last check-in is 45 minutes before departure for cars and 25 minutes for foot passengers. Check-in opens a little over two hours before the afternoon sailing.
