The Go Explore card — prices, what it covers and whether it's worth it

Go Explore card prices for 2026, what it covers on the Isle of Man's buses, railways and trams, where to buy it, and the maths on whether it beats single fares.

The Go Explore card is the Isle of Man’s all-in-one travel pass: unlimited buses, trains and trams for 1, 3, 5 or 7 days. Whether it saves you money comes down to one thing: how much time you’ll spend on the heritage railways, which are where the expensive fares are. Here’s what it costs, what it covers, and the sums for some typical days.

Prices (September 2026)

These are the 2026 prices from Bus Vannin’s Go Explore page (opens in a new tab):

Days Adult Child (5–15) Family
1 day £22 £11 £49
3 days £44 £22 £94
5 days £50 £25 £108
7 days £61 £30 £132
  • Family means two adults and up to three children aged 5–15.
  • Under-5s travel free with a paying adult.
  • Days means consecutive calendar days, not 24-hour periods. The card starts the first time you tap in, and that whole day counts as day one. Tap in at 5pm and you’ve used a day.
  • The card itself costs £2 on top for multi-day products. It’s reusable, so keep it for next time.

Note that the 5-day card costs only £6 more than the 3-day. If you’re here for four or five days and will use it on most of them, get the five.

What it covers

Go Explore gives unlimited travel on scheduled services on:

The two volunteer-run lines also take it. Groudle Glen Railway (opens in a new tab) accepts Go Explore on its regular services (May to October, not Hop-tu-Naa specials), and the Great Laxey Mine Railway (opens in a new tab) takes “Go Cards” on its Saturday service. Both are small fares anyway.

It doesn’t cover the steam railway’s Dining Car, special event trains, or anything that isn’t a scheduled service.

Where to buy it

  • Online, from Bus Vannin (opens in a new tab). Allow up to 10 days for the card to be posted. It only goes to UK addresses.
  • On board any bus, train or tram, for the one-day paper ticket.
  • In person at the Welcome Centre in the Sea Terminal (Douglas), Douglas steam railway station and Derby Castle tram station (when running), the Manx Museum, Ramsey bus station, Laxey and Ramsey tram stations (when running), the airport information desk, Port Erin and Castletown railway stations, the Castletown Manx National Heritage shop and the House of Manannan in Peel. That’s according to Bus Vannin’s Go Card FAQs (opens in a new tab). If you buy in person, register the card online so it can be replaced if lost.

Is it worth it? The maths

All fares below are 2026 adult prices from the railway fare charts (opens in a new tab) and the bus fare chart (opens in a new tab) (September 2026). Bus fares are by distance, so the bus figures are “about”.

Day 1: Laxey, Snaefell and Ramsey

The classic east-coast day: tram to Laxey, up Snaefell, tram on to Ramsey, bus home.

Leg Single fares
Manx Electric, Douglas to Laxey (single) £7.00
Snaefell, Laxey to summit (return) £16.00
Manx Electric, Laxey to Ramsey (single) £7.00
Bus 3, Ramsey to Douglas about £3.30
Total about £33.30

Go Explore 1 day: £22. You save about £11. Add a horse tram along the promenade to Derby Castle and you save a little more.

Day 2: south by steam

Steam train to Port Erin, bus out to Cregneash, steam train back.

Leg Single fares
Steam railway, Douglas to Port Erin (return) £17.00
Bus, Port Erin to Cregneash and back about £4.00
Total about £21.00

Go Explore 1 day: £22. It costs you about £1 more. Buy the tickets separately, unless you’ll also use buses in Douglas that evening.

Day 3: Peel by bus

Leg Single fares
Bus, Douglas to Peel and back about £5.60

Go Explore would cost £22. It costs you about £16 more. Pay as you go.

All three days in a row

Paying as you go comes to about £59.90. A 3-day Go Explore at £44, plus the £2 card, saves about £14. Against the smartest pay-as-you-go plan (a one-day paper ticket for the Snaefell day and single fares on the other two, about £48.60) the 3-day card still wins, but only by about £2.60. Add a couple of town buses and the gap widens. For a whole trip planned around the card, see the Isle of Man without a car.

A family on the Snaefell day

Two adults and two children aged 5–15 doing Day 1: the adults’ fares come to about £66.60 and the children’s to about £33.20 (half fare on the railways, about £1.60 on the bus). That’s about £99.80, against £49 for a family day card, a saving of around £50. It’s also £17 cheaper than buying two adult and two child Go Explore tickets.

The rule of thumb

  • Any day with Snaefell in it: buy Go Explore.
  • Any day with two or more long heritage-railway legs (Douglas–Ramsey, Douglas–Port Erin) plus some buses: probably buy it. Do the sums.
  • A single return on one railway and nothing else: buy the return.
  • Bus-only days: never. Use single fares or a Go Saver.
  • Families of three or more: the family card almost always wins on a railway day.

The Go Explore Heritage card

There’s also a 5-day Go Explore Heritage card for adults, which adds entry to all the Manx National Heritage sites: the Laxey Wheel, Castle Rushen, Peel Castle, Cregneash, the House of Manannan and the rest. Bus Vannin lists it at £79, and the Manx National Heritage shop (opens in a new tab) at £81 (September 2026), so check at the point of sale. Accompanied children get into the heritage sites free.

The comparison: a 5-day Go Explore (£50) plus the separate 7-day MNH holiday pass (opens in a new tab) (£35) costs £85 and gives you two extra days at the sites. The Laxey Wheel alone is £14 for an adult (September 2026). If you’ll visit three or more heritage sites in five days, the Heritage card is good value. If not, skip it. Our heritage guide will help you decide.

Common questions

Is the Go Explore card worth it?

On any day that includes the Snaefell Mountain Railway, or long trips on the Manx Electric or steam railway plus some buses, yes. A Douglas–Laxey–Snaefell–Ramsey day costs about £33 in single fares against £22 for the card (September 2026). On bus-only days it isn't worth it, because single fares are £3.60 or less.

Does the Go Explore card include the Snaefell Mountain Railway?

Yes. It covers Bus Vannin buses, the Isle of Man Steam Railway, the Manx Electric Railway, the Snaefell Mountain Railway and the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway. The Groudle Glen and Great Laxey Mine railways also accept it. It doesn't cover the steam railway Dining Car or special events.

Where can I buy a Go Explore card?

Online from Bus Vannin (posted to UK addresses only, allow up to 10 days), at the Welcome Centre in the Douglas Sea Terminal, the airport information desk, main railway and tram stations, or as a one-day paper ticket on board any bus, train or tram.

Does a 3-day Go Explore card have to be used on consecutive days?

Yes. Go Explore cards cover consecutive calendar days, starting the first time you tap in. A day means the whole calendar day, not 24 hours.
